Dr Stephens has extensive experience as a general adult Consultant Psychiatrist working in Bournemouth and Poole. He has worked as a Consultant since the year 2000 within a variety of NHS mental health services. Dr Stephens was the clinical lead for a busy urban Community Mental Health Team for 18 years before moving into Liaison Psychiatry. He has also managed acute inpatients, worked with the urban Assertive Outreach team, led an Early Intervention in Psychosis service and as the Consultant for an Inpatient Detoxification unit.
Early in 2018 he moved to a Consultant post in Liaison Psychiatry at Poole Hospital in order to pursue a special interest, working at the interface of medicine and psychiatry with complex medically ill patients. He works as a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist within a service for patients of 18 years and above including older adults. He has expertise in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of mental health problems including mood disorders, anxiety, stress-related and somatoform disorders, psychotic disorders, alcohol use disorders and organic mental disorders.
Within his NHS work, Dr Stephens has held Trust leadership roles for Dual Diagnosis (co-existing mental disorder and substance use problems), ECT, prescribing, early intervention in psychosis, suicide prevention and within senior medical management.
Dr Stephens is experienced in preparing reports for the courts in criminal proceedings and in personal injury cases.
Clinics:
Consultations usually take place in Bournemouth though by arrangement, he will see clients in their own homes, at solicitors’ offices or will undertake prison visits.
